We think The Lake District is probably one of the most romantic places in the UK to come and stay for couples. It offers anything from rugged mountain walks to Michelin starred restaurants and stunning lake views to high-end boutiques; perfect if you are looking for a romantic break, honeymoon or a place to ‘pop the question’.
But it’s not always easy to find the perfect romantic Lake District cottage for couples; there are literally thousands of cottages scattered across what is the largest national park in England and each area is unique. Having lived in The Lake District for many years we know this area inside out so we thought we would share some gems with you; here are our favourite romantic cottages for couples in The Lake District – enjoy!

Pooley Bridge, Ullswater | Sleeps 2 | No pets | From £295 p/night
Best for: lake views, walking
We start off with this very special boathouse. What could be more fitting than to actually stay right on the shores of one of the prettiest and most unspoilt lakes, Ullswater. The views are stunning and uninterrupted with the Martindale Fells just across the lake.
Inside it’s pretty special too; the open plan living and kitchen space features vaulted ceilings, wooden beams and wooden floors. It’s furnished in a relaxed and classic style with antique pieces, a comfy leather sofa and wood burner. Double doors open into the luxurious bedroom with full views down the lake and the fells beyond. Imagine waking up to this. And when you have finally managed to tear yourself away from those views from the sumptuous bed you can simply relocate to the balcony for breakfast (or lunch) with even more views of the lake. Oh, and there’s a freestanding copper bath too.
Ullswater is probably one of our favourite lakes, it is just so unspoilt and lush. It’s easily accessible from the motorway, yet feels a world away. There aren’t too many shops and restaurants close by which adds to the ‘get away from it all feeling’. For a nice dinner out we recommend the rather fancy ‘Another Place’ hotel, only a short 20 minutes walk away. Ready to pack your bags? We are…
Bowston, near Kendal | Sleeps 2 | 2 Dogs welcome | From £205 p/night
Best for: luxury & pampering, space
Granted, the next cottage isn’t set right on the lakeshore, but we just had to include it. Twitchers is one simply of the finest holiday cottages for couples in The Lake District. Finished to the highest standards it boasts every little (and big) luxury you can imagine such as integral sound systems, a widescreen TV, bi-folding doors, a free-standing bath in your bedroom, and an en-suite with monsoon shower. It’s also huge which we think is luxury in itself.
On top of this you have exclusive use of the indoor heated pool, gym, hot tub and sauna that are designed to please even the most discerning of guests. And for that special romantic break you’ll be pleased to hear that spa treatments and your own private chef are also available.
This romantic Lake District cottage is conveniently located in the quiet rolling hills in between the market town of Kendal and Lake Windermere. Both Kendal and the town of Windermere offer a good range of restaurants, bars and shops. And if you’re partial to some fresh crusty bread we highly recommend More Bakery, only a short drive away in Staveley’s trendy Mill Yard.
We like the timeless interior of this romantic cottage, but if contemporary is more your thing then check out The Shippon, Twitchers’ clean-lined little brother.
Kentmere | Sleeps 2 | Pets welcome | From £100 p/night
Best for: rustic Lakeland charm, seclusion, walking
Not too far up the road from our last Lake District cottage for couples is the bustling village of Staveley. It’s a great little place loved by both locals and visitors with trendy cafes, bakeries and mountain bike shops. Well, trendy by country standards anyway. But it’s also the way into the quiet Kentmere valley, a bit of a hidden gem. Carry on up from the weir (where you can spot kingfishers) and cross the bridge as the road narrows and winds its way up the valley. At the head of the valley you’ll find a collection of scattered farmhouses and cottages and one of these cute boltholes is our next Lake District couples retreat. The Nook is a picture perfect Lake District cottage with stone built walls, beamed ceilings, a large Inglenook fireplace with wood burner and of course an Aga cooker. It’s recently been sympathetically updated with a gorgeous bathroom and furnished with genuine farmhouse antiques so it’s lost none of its authentic charm.
There are no shops, cafes or restaurants in Kentmere and we think that only adds to the experience. Coming into this glorious valley is like stepping back into time and it’s one of the main reasons why we’re so excited about this cottage for couples. Here you just come to slow down, relax and unwind by taking in the views and going for some of our favourite walks in the Lakes. We love doing the Kentmere horseshoe, a circular walk you can start right from your own doorstep. It’s an ‘all day-er’ which takes around 6-8 hours but it’s well worth it as it offers some of the most breathtaking views in the area. And we think The Nook is just the kind of place you’d want to come back to after one of those glorious days on the fells.
If The Nook is booked, try its baby brother ‘Shepherd’s Nook’ – just a tad smaller but equally cute.
Sawrey, Lake Windermere | Sleeps 2 | Pets welcome
Best for: Views, seclusion, uber-cool design
With a name like The Love Shack, how could we not include it in our collection of our favourite romantic retreats in the Lake District? Tucked away in between the trees on a slope on the side of Lake Windermere, this little bolthole packs a punch. Owners Karen & Adam have reimagined the concept of a woodland cabin and the result is an architectural mini masterpiece. No wonder it won the coveted RIBA award in 2011.
It makes a perfect Lake District romantic cottage for couples as it’s set on the quiet side of Lake Windermere, great for walks off the beaten path, relaxing and unwinding and simply soaking up those views.
Elterwater | Sleeps 2 | No dogs | From £85 p/night
Best for: Mountain views, walking, pubs
Sometimes it’s the location of your holiday cottage that really makes your romantic break extra special. One of those iconic locations in the Lake District is the stunning Langdale valley and Elterwater is a pretty much perfect Lakeland village nestled in the bottom. Surrounded by majestic mountains this is a place you have to see to believe.
And it so happens to be that our next romantic cottage for couples is located just here. The Stable at Oakbank is set up from the village of Elterwater with breathtaking views across the valley with the mountains making the perfect backdrop.
It’s finished to a very high standard and furnished with love and attention to detail. There’s a large well equipped kitchen, a spacious lounge with a log burner and a super comfy king-sized bed.
Many of the great Lake District walks are on your doorstep, ranging from the challenging Langdale Pikes to the easier Home Fell, one of the lower Wainwright fells but with incredible 360 degree views.
You’ll also be pleased to hear that there are some cracking pubs within walking distance too, such as The Brittania Inn, The Old Dungeon Ghyll or The Three Shires to name a few. And if you fancy a relaxing spa treatment or demanding gym workout we can recommend the facilities at the Langdale Estate, also just around the corner.
Ambleside | Sleeps 2 | No Pets | From £105 p/night
Best for: Mountain Views, walking, amenities
Forget infinity pools, this is an infinity lawn! The stunning views from this contemporary retreat for couples draw the eye from the lawn across the valley to the mountain tops beyond.
It’s not often you find a modern, architect designed holiday cottage bolted on the side of a listed farmhouse. But the meeting of two worlds definitely works in this setting. The large windows and patio doors make the spaces light and airy and of course allow for some spectacular views onto the fells.
Infinity is located close by Ambleside, a lively little town with what must be the highest ratio of walking shops to inhabitants as well as some very good restaurants, cafes and bars. Try Zeffirellis, a stylish cinema, restaurant and bar all rolled into one. Or pop into Rattle Ghyll Cafe where locally ground coffee from Red Bank should please even the most demanding hipster cofficionado.
Bowness-on-Windermere | Sleeps 2 | No pets | From £200 p/night
Great for: Lake views, hot tub, amenities, instagram envy
Can you tell we have a bit of a thing for views? Well, who can blame us when it just so happens to be one of the best views in The Lake District. This boathouse is super swanky (and very instagrammable) and looks like it’s just come out of the latest James Bond film. You can even bring your own boat to re-enact a spectacular getaway scene. And then calm down in your very own hot tub.
It’s one large open plan space where cooking, dining, sleeping and lounging all combine into one. But rest assured, the marble clad bathroom with huge monsoon shower is separate.
The Boathouse is only a short drive away from Bowness-on-Windermere, a hot spot for showing off your Porsche and Ferrari. Or Aston Martin obviously. With lots of boutiques, bars and restaurants this is a great place if you love the Lake District but prefer to keep your shoes nice and clean.
Cartmel | Sleeps 2 | Pets welcome | From £170 p/night
Great for: Eating out, boutiques, low level walks
Our list wouldn’t be complete without a luxury cottage in Cartmel, a tiny chocolate box town huddled around its ancient priory. Due to the famous Cartmel Racecourse (no, for horses silly) it’s always been a firm favourite with the upper classes but since the arrival of Simon Rogan’s Michelin starred restaurant L’Enclume its status has been cemented as the place to be and to be seen. As a result you’ll struggle to find a shop that doesn’t sell hand-cured, twice fermented locally foraged candles and other suchlike products.
Seriously though, Cartmel is a very nice place to spend a romantic break in The Lake District and you’re bound to impress your better half if you’re looking to celebrate that special occasion.
And where better to stay than at Wharton Loft, a spacious bolthole mixing contemporary industrial chic with historic original features. Everything here is big, from the open plan living space to the super-king sized bed or from the freestanding bath to the huge sofa parked in front of the large flat screen TV.
On your trips out, pop into Grange-over-Sands, a quaint Edwardian seaside resort with a fine promenade and some quality establishments such as the award-winning Higginsons Butchers and The Hazelmere Bakery & Tearooms. We’re sure that’s won some award as well.
Bouth, South Lakes | Sleeps 2 | No dogs | From £105 p/night
Best for: Peace & quiet
Ask a local where the village of Bouth is and you will probably get a bit of head scratching. We’ve heard of it and roughly know where it is, but how do you get to it? This off-the-beaten Lake District location is one of the attractions of this super comfortable and stylish romantic retreat for two.
For your information, Bouth is located in between Lake Windermere and Coniston in unspoilt countryside. It’s not far from the main attractions of the Lake District but the lack of quick main roads has fortunately kept the crowds out.
Rose Cottage is a cosy traditional Lakeland cottage but upgraded to offer all the luxuries and comforts you would expect to find in a five star bolthole. From the stunning handmade kitchen to the luxurious bathroom with freestanding bath, this place is perfect for relaxing and unwinding in style.
And if you fancy a lunch out, you must visit The Bakehouse in Greenodd. Their Rueben pastrami sandwich is the stuff of legends and their unique evening takeaway meals are to die for. And on the way out grab ice cream and waffles or churros from The Handmade Ice Cream Company next door. Promise me you’ll go.
